I’ve been there. Hanging art up on your walls is not usually the priority. It can be difficult when you have these large open spaces, and don’t have any idea of what to put up. This is when those trips to IKEA come about, and we just buy something cheap that will work for the time being. Sometimes we don’t even know if we like what we put up. Stop this! Your art should matter. You should love what you have on your walls, and it should be unique.
DETERMINE YOUR STYLE
Discover what type of art you like. One of the things I love about Art Cricket LA, is that you can take a quiz to help you out here. In general, try to think about the style, colors, subject, and the medium. What is it that most often calls out to you. There is never a wrong answer. Just think about what you find yourself being drawn to most.
Not all art is the same. There is one of a kind pieces that were painted and created with love. There are screen prints, which would allow for some repeats, but are certainly designed by the artist and screen pulled by hand. Photography is so great because it can be presented as is, or can be manipulated by the artist. Prints and Giclee’s are usually what you find at larger retail spaces. These just mean they were printed by a computer, and can be mass produced and have very little unique quality to them.
HOW TO FIND IT
Instead of going to those larger commercial spots, try looking into local artists in your area. You can find them at galleries, art walks, or even a local coffee shop.
Etsy is a nice place to discover artists. Just be sure you are looking at the materials and sizes of these prints prior to purchasing.
If you’re open to fun, sometimes even bizarre art, then I recommend going to a Flea Market or Thrift Store. You can always find inexpensive art that has history. Plus, its a green way to get yourself some new wall decor.
Most people assume you need to spend thousands of dollars if you want to buy one of a kind art from an experienced artist. This is not the case. More often than not, you can pay the same price for something that comes from a local artist, that you would expect to pay at Z Gallery or Crate and Barrel. Plus, art should be something you invest in. You don’t have to spend as little as possible. Splurge and get something that really makes a statement in your space.
This can be the hardest part about choosing art. Ultimately you have to decide whether or not you want one large dramatic piece, or multiple from the same or various artists. Sometimes when you see the right piece, you just know.
You should love everything you have in your home, and your art should be no exception. You have to look at it so much, you might as well enjoy it.
Knowing that you have something that is one of a kind makes it so much more special.
It’s a pretty nice feeling when you have your friends and family come over and they are always sure to comment on how great your art selection is.
ALLOW THE ART TO DECIPHER YOUR ROOMS STYLE
Instead of trying to find art that matches the throw pillows you already own, use your art to create the room itself. Bring out the colors and lines you find in the art, and allow for the rest of the room to come together accordingly. This actually makes the whole process so much easier.
