I have always been interested in sign design for businesses, and how much its look can really affect your impression of the place. I am most often intrigued by how a simple sign can vastly make or break the chances of me entering a spot at all. I am certainly drawn much more to the old modern signs of the 50’s and 60’s, but other times I just love the use of font and color no matter what style it is exactly.
Porterville Lanes has the greatest sign design ever. This is the bowling alley in my home town, and somehow its dilapidated state makes it all the more charming.
The reason I had even chose to post on my bizarre obsession with signs was this ‘Blue Goose Lounge’ sign in Hollywood. It’s even cooler at night when it’s all lit up.
The Griffith Park Observatory is one of my families preferred spots in LA. The sign is clearly not the most important element of the this place. However I think its simplicity is what makes it so beautiful. This particular image is one of many that visitors take daily. Isn’t is amazing?
What could could be more straightforward than the word ‘EAT’ above a diner. The ‘Los Feliz Cafe’ has such a classic sign above for both day and night.
The Hollywood Palladium is a landmark here in Los Angeles. It’s a great music venue, but I specifically love it’s example of a great art deco sign. This is one of many like it sprinkled throughout the city.
Portland is one of those cities that has a very wide variety of… well… anything and everything. Naturally this is why I like it so much. So this particular sign posted on the side of a building in the downtown area was particularly perfect.
My favorite neighborhood in LA is Atwater Village. It has this great dive bar called ‘Club Tee Gee’, which everyone reads as ‘Tee Yee’, but there is no mistaking what type of place you’re going to enter in to. I mean who doesn’t love a neon sign right?
Last is the infamous Cafe 101. It’s such a great example of how nice it is to keep some places the same. Its simplicity is comforting, and it makes you feel like you’re time traveling for just a moment.
