Sometimes we have furniture lying around that just needs a little repair, or a slight pick me up. Is it worth buying an entirely brand new piece, or should you just give your older pieces a little help? It’s hard to know for sure, but here are some ways to get a better idea.
CASEGOODS. These are all of the pieces in your home that are made of hard material like wood, metal, plastic, or glass. Coffee tables, book shelves, tables, or desks.
You just want something new. You can be amazed by how much a new coat of paint can completely transform something. For the price of a gallon of paint and maybe some hardware, you suddenly have a brand new piece in your home.
It’s still in good condition but it’s not working where it is. Maybe it just needs to be be moved to a new spot in another room.
It can easily be repaired by yourself, or done on the cheap. Never spend too much on repairing something unless it’s just some truly unique piece of furniture.

If it is in a constant need of repair. It’s simply not worth it anymore if you are always having to go back and fix it every few months.
The cost of refinishing or repairing exceeds, or even comes close to, the price of something new.
The structure of your furniture is still great, it just needs to be reupholstered. This means it’s got great bones, just a bad cover.
You just want something with a brand new fabric. Maybe you’re sick of the color, or the pattern. Either way, you can have it reupholstered at a local spot. If you want to try it yourself, check out this tutorial from Better Homes and Gardens.
The stuffing in those pillows are still firm. You can use what you had as a filler for the new fabric you found. You can make your own pillow covers using that great new fabric you found.
It’s just stained. You can absolutely just get a new fabric, and be sure that it’s something that hides stains a little better.
Say ‘Bye’ if…
Your chair or sofa cushions just look saggy. Don’t try to get it re-stuffed because it can be expensive. Plus keeping it in this condition just makes the piece look sad. Put it out of its misery.
It’s just plain uncomfortable. You want to be able to enjoy what you’re sitting on. You should be able to sit on your piece of furniture and be happy where you are. Comfort is so important.
It was a cheap piece that was meant to be temporary. We all buy the occasional temporary fillers. Don’t hold on to it longer than you need to.
You love it and it just needs a professional cleaning. I know how it is to spend so much on an area rug and then watch it get stained so quickly. Just rake care of it and clean it as often as you’re able to.
It doesn’t work in one room, but would certainly work in another. Always move these things around when you can.

It’s stained, torn, or worn. These are items that should be updated regularly.
You have a new pet or baby. Trust me, you are more than likely going to need a whole new rug or throw to accommodate the new stains that are coming your way.
You just want something new. Textiles should be inexpensive enough that it won’t break the bank to get yourself some new throw or curtains.
