Q. My husband and I want to get this cool chandelier from IKEA for our bedroom. We have really tall 13 foot ceilings. How do I know how high my lights are supposed to be? We want to put something in our kitchen too, and we don’t want it hanging down too low or too high. – Naomi
A. IKEA has some great lights that you can easy install yourself. You want to be sure you are choosing the right style, size, and location for your new fixture. Chandelier height is important, so be sure you think of the following prior to buying or installing anything.
Type of Room
Foyers, Living Rooms, Dining Rooms, Kitchen Islands, Bedrooms and Bathrooms are all great rooms to have chandeliers in. The function and size of the room can dictate your size and style needs.
Getting something too big can overwhelm a space. Getting something too small can make it look puny and not important. Getting the right size is critical to enjoying the look.
The higher the ceiling the larger the fixture. This also means the lower the ceiling the smaller the fixture.
Add the height of the room, to the width of the room, and you have the diameter of your chandelier. This means a 15′ wide room, with a 13′ ceiling height gives you a 28″ fixture size.
The higher the ceiling, the higher the fixture.
In a foyer, stick with 7′ above the floor. When you have a 2 story high ceiling, don’t let it go below the second floor.
For a dining room or kitchen, shoot for 30″ – 33″ above the table or counter.
For a bedroom, 7′ should be where the bottom of the lighting fixture will fall. You ultimately want to be sure no one ever hits it if they are walking underneath it.
Usually, centering the fixture is the way to go. Center it in your entry way, above your dining table, or bed.
Place it above furniture. Think about using chandeliers or pendants above a night stand, or above a seating area. It helps divide the space and makes a real statement.
Don’t let your homes present style dictate your chandelier. There is nothing wrong with mixing up styles. It really does add charm and is much more eye-catching this way.
Go bold. If you plan to add lighting, you should include something that makes a statement.
One may not be enough. Sometimes, depending on the space, you can have more than one light. In area’s like the kitchen or dining room, multiple lights can be more functional and look nicer.
