Q. I need a headboard for my bedroom. I see all sorts of make your own headboards on Pinterest. Should I do this instead of buying a new one? I don’t want to spend money on a new one if I don’t have to. I want something different but I am so not a handyman at all. -Brenda
A. Oh there are so many great DIY headboard ideas on Pinterest aren’t there? It’s crazy. Just remember, as amazing as they look, many of them are actually pretty hard to make on your own. Plus, the costs of materials can make it no longer worth your while. It doesn’t sound like you’re the handiest person around, so perhaps you’re better off doing something easy and totally outside of the box. These DIY headboard ideas will make your bedroom look different from everyone else, and it shouldn’t cost you much at all. Plus, I promise you should have no trouble making these totally on your own.
Drapes or Shower Curtain
Simply add a curtain rod and you can use absolutely any type of curtains you like. There are some great curtains out there with gorgeous patterns and colors. Choose this first, and then find yourself bedding and other textiles that work with it.
Is there any better way to show off your personality than to find a piece of art you love? You can either use lots of smaller pieces clustered together in place of a headboard, or you can find one large piece. As you can see in the image here, using a large art piece looks pretty amazing.
This is perhaps my favorite, and the easiest headboard idea. You can find tapestries online at various second hand stores or flea markets. At least that is where you can find the greatest ones in my opinion. Big or small, these tapestries can go directly onto the wall and make for a very dramatic look.
Reclaimed Wood Planks
This includes nothing more than constructing it, sealing it, and installing it. This is by far the most involved of the headboards, but this tutorial from 508 Restoration and Design makes it very easy to do all 3 steps.
Paint On wall
The idea of color blocking is very popular right now. So naturally, it makes sense to block out a headboard and paint it up in one great color that contrasts with the paint in the rest of the room.
Wall Paper or Decals
Create your own frame or headboard with an interesting pattern or image. As you can see here, this gothic wall decal is insanely simple, but still a whole lot of fun right?
