I really do love my home office. It’s my own special place and I spend a lot of time in there. The one thing I don’t love is when it starts to get a little chaotic and messy and my desk looks less like a place to work and more like a place that is housing all of my crap. When this happens I start to get discouraged and my room is looking less and less special. So, I have worked on methods to maintaining the madness for a while now. I’ve researched, I’ve practiced, and I have come to some conclusions that I think may help you learn to love your home office too.
Nothing Too Big
Be sure that your desk is only as large as it needs to be. Once you start having extra space, you think it’s okay to fill it up with junk mail and receipts. For me, I have space for my computer, keyboard, and space to draw up various things. Other than that, anything more becomes a problem.
I know, this is nothing new. But I have discovered it’s the type of storage I get that helps me. For you it may be something different, but this is why it’s important to sit and think about how you use your desk first. I mean there are endless options for you to use, so be sure it’s actually going to work for you, otherwise don’t even bother.
Here’s what I recommend, a good drawer organizer, file & paper storage, cord organizers, and one good box. Why the box you ask? Well if you’re anything like me, you need a cheat if you want this clean desk to remain clean. So, I have a box on my desk that is a beautiful little container that I am able to use so that I can hide away all of my junk.
Don’t just go and get generic office supplies. So many places have beautiful desk and office supplies that really aren’t much more than those cheap ones. Look for nice scissors, pen holders, staplers, because when you have prettier items that are just for your desk, they tend to stick around near your desk. You cherish them more so you don’t leave around in weird places, and you are more inclined to be sure they look nice onto of your desk.
Schedule A Routine
Every week on Monday morning I know that I can’t start my week until I go over everything on my desk. I don’t know about you, but I quickly gather up an insane amount of bills, project materials, and random pieces of paper that will get out of hand quickly if I don’t do something each and every week. If you do it often it really does only take a few minutes to clear up. Otherwise it gets a bit hectic, and you just sort of hate your desk. Don’t hate it, just clean it.
I enjoy the little things around me that I can look at and enjoy. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy. A simple calendar that you love, or a photo in a frame. Or maybe it’s a small little plant in a cute little planter. It doesn’t matter, it’s entirely up to you. Just add something that makes you smile. For me, I have various things next to me that inspire me. I have my favorite calendar from Anthropologie, stationery from an artist I love, paint swatches, and images from a magazine. This may work for you, it may not, that’s the beauty of personalizing your space. It’s meant for you to enjoy it.
This is the most important. Just relax. Your home will never look like the styled spaces on Pinterest. Or maybe it will. If so, kudos to you. However for the majority of you out there, it’s probably not the case. So don’t be so hard on yourself and just enjoy the space. It’s easier than you know.
