I am proud to say I have made myself a bedside table that cost less than $3. I was beyond thrilled with the look and cost of our new table.
Last year my husband and I bought this TV Tray (see below) at a pretty great thrift store in Sunland. In fact we got 2 of them for $1. I’ve been so hesitant to paint over this glorious art work, but the time had come. Besides we still have its brother in original condition in our living room.
WHAT YOU NEED
TV Tray (Flea Market and Thrift Stores get them in far too often)
White Spray Paint
3 Acrylic Paints (I chose Navy, Orange, and Yellow)
Golden Metallic Paint
Modge Podge (Glossy Finish)
Clean the tray. Confirm all of the pieces work properly. If not, it’s easy to get the necessary pieces. Sometimes it’s good to buy yourself more than one so that you can use the extra pieces on the other to repair your project tray.
Spray paint the top, and more than one coat may be necessary. When it’s dry, tape off your pattern with painters tape and spray the edges with the white paint. It will make for cleaner lines. When you tape off your top, just do whatever comes to you. Personally I wanted to go with this simple geometric blocking. Once it’s dry just remove the tape very slowly.
Tape off the tray for that the edges can be painted. Now paint it gold. If you’re using a brush, which I recommend, you are going to want to do 2-3 coats. Also make sure you paint the legs for a much more cohesive look.
Cover the top with 3 good coats of glossy Mode Podge. Once it’s dry you can cover with any accents of your choosing. See ‘Great Bedside Table Accents‘ for help.
