How often do you see a pretty picture of a room and think about how your kids would just demolish it. I mean not only is it not child friendly, but it is completely impractical. I know there are things we wish we could have, but it simply doesn’t make sense when you have younger ones around. There are certain things that just doesn’t work when you have kids, but there is always a solution.
Oh my jeez, how nice does a room look with crisp white furniture inside of it? So nice! However think about how bad a room would look with dirty white furniture. Imagine the applesauce, boogers, and shoe prints that would cover every inch of it. Realistically, my inability to keep my red wine in my glass is why I can’t have it, but that’s a whole other issue.
Solution: Bring in your love for white in other ways. Ways that are easier to replace or clean when they get dirty, because they will get dirty. Go with something plastic or a high paint gloss so that it’s easier to maintain. If you want white upholstery, get some white pillows that you an unzip and bleach from time to time. Maybe keep the white in your own personal spaces, like your bedroom or office. This way you can have it in the home, but it’s not in the kid friendly areas.
This is usually the case with coffee tables or end tables. However it’s coffee tables that tend to cause the most damage. I think most of us have bumped our heads on the edge of the coffee table as kids. Some of us are lucky enough to have scars because of it.
Solution: If you just need to have something, try to get something round, or something soft. Ottomans are very popular right now, and can work as extra seating in a pinch.
A Styled Home
This is just crazy when you have little ones. It’s a miracle if you can just have a clean room. Expecting it to be perfectly styled is not realistic.
Solution: Think about eliminating some things. It feels so much more styled when you have less in the space. If you’re able to have some shelving or a mantle up high, this is where you can have your styled pieces. Your kids can’t get to them, and it’s just enough to make you feel like you’re getting what you want.
Whether it be glass, chrome, or another wonderful shiny finish, these furnishings just don’t work. I mean unless you want to spend all of your time cleaning the smudges off of the surface, I say avoid it. There is nothing worse than having a beautiful mirrored piece of furniture, and seeing tons of tiny fingerprints going around all sides of it.
Solution: Try doing it in small amounts. Get yourself some accessories with that beautiful mirrored finish. Find one beautiful table lamp that will give you what you need. If that’s not enough, look for a large mirror that has a glass frame. It will give you the look that you’re desperately needing.
